New Year’s Resolution

We’re almost one month into 2015 and hopefully the majority of us are still going strong with our new year’s resolutions. One of the top picked resolutions every year is to be healthier and eat more meals at home. This requires preparing and cooking our own food. Cooking at home is not only a health benefit but can also bring families and friends together while providing an outlet for creativity and can be a form of relaxation to many. But did you know that cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries? Instead of relying that the smoke alarm will go off and sound an alert make sure you’re prepared so you can prevent this from happening. Here are a few safety tips for your next cooking adventure.
Cook with caution and be alert! Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or boiling food. If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while the food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stove top: oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains. Always keep a baking pan or lid nearby to quickly cover the pan if it catches fire. If you ever have doubt about fighting a small fire, just leave! Make sure you shut the door behind you to help contain the fire.
Safety first and bon appetit!
