Happy Fire Prevention Week!

Fire Prevention Week was established to honor the Great Chicago Fire that started on October 8, 1871. According to legend, on October 8, 1871, Mrs. O’Leary was in her barn, milking her cow. The cow kicked over a lamp, which started the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire burned for over 27 houses and killed over 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. There is no proof that the fire was started by Mrs. O’Leary cows and she swore she and the cows were already in bed for the evening. No one has evidence to prove where the fire originated, although there are plenty of theories that have developed over the years. Although the Chicago Fire wasn’t the biggest fire in American history ( Peshtigo Fire is the biggest), it is still commemorated and changed the way firefighters and public officials thought about fire safety.

National Fire Prevention week was issued by President Woodrow Wilson in 1920 and is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. Fire Safety Prevention week was created to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention. This weeks theme is; Hear The Beep, When You Sleep!
